Republic of Ireland win Milenio Sports Dublin Gathering CP International Tournament!

13 May
Republic of Ireland emerged as winners of the 2013 Milenio Sports Dublin Gathering CP International Tournament following a thrilling 4-2 penalty shout out win over Holland at Peamount United FC on Saturday 12th of May.

The teams could not be separated following a 3-3 draw after extra time and the responsibility fell to Republic of Ireland’s Gary Messett to take the decisive penalty to send the home crowd into raptures and keep the trophy in Dublin for another year.

Holland began the game very brightly with Ijas Visker thundering a shot from distance under the crossbar past Republic of Ireland Goalkeeper Simon Le Strange to give Holland the lead after just 90 seconds. Republic of Ireland managed to compose themselves however from this early setback and release Tom Badun with a lovely through ball from midfield to beat Holland Goalkeeper Stefan Boersma on 22 minutes to equalise.

Man of the Match Gary Messett then scored a fine goal just on half time to give Republic of Ireland the lead with a lovely finish past Boersma. The goal crowned Messett as the Tournaments leading scorer but Holland again responded with John Swinkels finishing really well low in the left hand corner to tie the game at 2-2 on 49 minutes and sending the game into extra time.

In the first period of extra time on 65 minutes Dillon Sheridan produced a wonderful moment of genius curling a left footed shot from outside the box into the top left hand corner to make it 3-2. The Irish fans at Peamout were still celebrating Sheridan’s brilliant goal when Holland yet again bounced back with Peter Kooij equalising 3 minutes later.

Both sides had chances late in extra time to win the game but ultimately Republic of Ireland proved to have the cooler heads on the day winning the penalty shootout 4-2 and keeping the trophy in Dublin.

As Republic of Ireland Captain Luke Evans was handed the trophy by Deputy Mayor of South Dublin County Council Gino Kenny, the players and staff dedicated the win to Republic of Ireland’s Ciaran Devlin who suffered a broken leg in an accidental collision in the 2-1 win over Scotland on Thursday 9th of May and was pivotal in Republic of Ireland’s journey to winning the tournament.
